Baloise Session Backline Blog

Instruments-Knowledge #2

Brought to you by ...

Welcome to the fascinating world of the trombone! This ancient instrument, whose history goes back to the Middle Ages, also plays an important role in today's light music – be it in jazz or funk. For example, what would the sound of Earth, Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, Kool & the Gang or James Brown be without the distinctive brass parts? In the new Baloise Session Backline Blog, we take a close look at this exciting instrument and see how it is played. In doing so, we are able to interview a prominent guest who is a great lover of music, is strongly committed to music and the Baloise Session with his company and even plays the trombone himself: It's Michael Müller, the CEO of the Baloise Group. «What excites me is that you can play very many different styles of music with this instrument,» says Michael Müller. «When I was younger, I also enjoyed the fact that you can play very dominantly and loudly. But now I also appreciate the quiet tones.» We met Michael Müller in the CLUB at the Baloise Session, the music festival in Basel that Baloise Versicherungen has been sponsoring for more than 20 years and where many famous trombonists, such as the US virtuoso Trombone Shorty, have performed on stage. Michael Müller, who is an enthusiastic amateur musician, as he shows in the Backline Blog, is convinced: «The business world and the world of music have a lot in common. It's important to listen to each other and you try to create something that meshes harmoniously and becomes a whole.»
